Art 4 Autism is a business which aims to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorders, while providing a vehicle to showcase autistic talents.
Art 4 Autism was founded by Lisa Simone after she was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in October 2007.
After 39 years of trying to 'fix' things about herself which were perceived as character flaws, her diagnosis came as an overwhelming relief.
She then began developing a series of cartoons, drawing inspiration from the health, sensory, learning and social difficulties she experiences in day-to-day life.
The cartoons show her literal mind and the way she thinks in pictures, her hyper-sensitivity to smells, lights and sounds and the difficulty she has in conforming with other people's emotional expectations.
A 2010 calendar, and a range of T-shirts bearing the cartoons are the first available Art 4 Autism product lines.
More are planned. Meanwhile Lisa continues to draw the Adventures of Zaffy - who is the autistic character in the cartoons.
Zaffy is also Lisa’s cartoonist name. Suggestions are welcome for new cartoons people would like to see.
A travelling exhibition of artworks by people on the autism spectrum is also planned.
Lisa’s own body of artwork developed from scribblings she started doing as a way of soothing her over-stimulated nervous system.
